“Can you do what needs to be done?”
Rumours were abounded that developers Firesprite had taken the reins from Supermassive Games, and were about to unleash a sequel to 2015 horror-survival game Until Dawn.
Well, now we know those rumours are true, with an official announcement trailer from Sony Computer Entertainment.
Far from the frigid mountain chills of the original, Until Dawn 2 takes us to a beautiful tropical island.
In this standalone sequel, we meet a new cast of characters as they work on the latest episode of their hit paranormal show “Dead True.” Supposedly, their island paradise has a dark history revolving around an abandoned mental facility.
However, the threat they face is much greater than any paranormal spooks, as a hulking figure armed with a machete emerges from the jungle. How many of the group will survive until dawn when help arrives? It’s up to you.
Of course, given the enormous success of 2015’s Until Dawn, it’s hardly surprising a sequel has emerged. From the trailer, it looks as though the decision-based gameplay remains, enabling the player to control the fate of each character through their gameplay decisions. As the clip makes clear, every character can survive the peril, if you make the right choice.
However, fans of the first game will remember that the promotion presented us with a game that looked like a straight-forward slasher tale. That wasn’t the case, as later gameplay revealed several unexpected twists. So, are we being led astray once more?
Little else is known about Until Dawn 2, except that it will arrive exclusively to PS5 in 2027. However, we’ll keep our ear to the ground for any further updates.
